House Hunting Tip #3: The Impact of Commuting

Love this house! Now how will this impact my commute?

The list of wants and needs when we are looking at homes to buy can get quite long!  And one topic that is almost always at the top of the list is how will this location impact my commute to work.   To help answer this question we love the Walk Score® widget.  It shows Walk, Transit, and Bike Score ratings, and scores by category for any address.

When you add a property to your DADO House Hunting app, you will automatically receive the walk, transit and bike scores for that location.   Here is how to read each score.

The Walk Score

From a walkers paradise to don’t leave home without a car, you can tell immediately right from your phone if the house you are considering is in a neighborhood where you can walk to many of the activities you would like to participate in.

The Transit Score

Mass transit can be a great way to get to work if you live more than a few minutes from the office.  This gives you the flexibility to work on the bus, train or subway.  Or simply read or knit for pleasure to unwind from a grueling day in the office.

The Bike Score

For those of us that love to bike (especially when we are trying to keep in peak shape), there is also a bike score.  Did you know that the EPA said that community pollution is significantly more detrimental to the environment and building energy efficiency.  So if you want to help the planet while commuting, taking a bike to work could be your best option!

So, car? bike? train? bus? or just great walking shoes?

Commuting can eat up significant time in your day and impact the environment more than you realize.  We make it easier to see which house has the best commuting scores for the lifestyle you want to live.
